Beginnings of Rome
Legend of Romulus & Remus
Facts
- Rome most likely created around 750 B.C. according to escavations on Palatine Hill
- Legend states that 21st of April 753 B.C. is the founding date of Rome
The Legend(s)
- Amulius overthrew King Numitor and murdered his successors and forced Numitor's daughter Rhea Silvia to become a Vestal Virgin, Mars the god of war raped Rhea Silvia while she slept, she had twins Romulus and Remus.
- Amulius had Rhea thrown into the Tiber, where she married the river god. twins put in a reed basket and put adrift. Caught in branches of a fig tree. rescued by a she-wolf who fed them until a shepherd found them. Another story says the shepherd wife fed them and she was a former prostitute, lupa in latin means she-wolf and prostitute.
- As adults the boys raised an army marched on Amilius and killed him and restored their grand-father Numitor to the throne
- Decided to build a new city where they had been caught by the fig tree, Romulus chose Palentine hill, Remus chose Aventine
- Romulus and his followers began to build a city on Palentine hill and plowed the boundary with a plow pulled by a white cow. Began build ing a wall, Remus jumped over the ditch and hopped the wall, Romulus picked up a brick and killed his brother and therfore became the king of Latium
- Another legend has Aeneas, a Trojan hero, marrying the daughter of the King of the Latins. Romulus and Remus are descendants of imaginary kings who come from Aeneas.
